History of BROA

BROA was developed through a multilateral partnership between business and NGOs. BROA was first piloted by British American Tobacco and its NGO partners, Earthwatch Institute, Fauna & Flora International, and the Tropical Biology Association in 2006 in Indonesia and Uganda, and has since been implemented across 20 countries that BAT have operations in, as well as being taken up by a number of other companies with agricultural supply chains.

BROA has received recognition from the United Nations Environment Program The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity (TEEB) report, the United Nations Food & Agriculture Organisation (FAO), and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development ("Eco4Biz - Ecosystem services and biodiversity tools to support business decision-making").
